Zig zag stitching on the sewing machine is my preferred option now.  I have a serger which I inherited but havent taken the time to learn how to use yet!!

I used to use masking tape but that can fray the edges when you take it off.

If you dont have a sewing machine then you could use blanket stitching on the edges to hold it together.  It takes time but gives you peace of mind that your piece of fabric wont disintegrate while you are stitching!!!

I use a zig-zag stitch on my sewing machine.  I have used masking tape, as well, but dont like it much, so wont do that again!

I sew bias binding around the edges. It can be framed with it on or removed for other finishing methods

I zigzag the edges and straight sew over the zigzag
