I am working on a large project now, and I also roll the fabric.  It's still awkward, but it's working.

Thought I'd write an update for you - checked the stitch count and the pattern is actually 20inches square. I gave up and bought a big, 26inch wide, roller frame for tapestry and am working on it 2 handed by leaning it against a table as I go!

I finished a large project that required a yard of linen and I did it entirely in hand.  I would just gather the fabric to the stitch area or roll it to that area and stitch away.

I roll up the excess fabric then secure it with one of the claw hair clips.  Works great for me!

The scroll frame is the way to go for projects like this! Glad to hear that you got it figured out!

I recently finished a piece that was 36" x 36".  I did it entirely in hand (no hoop or qsnaps) and just gathered the fabric in my hand.  I have used the round hair clips to hold the extra fabric by rolling it up and putting the clips around the fabric.
