[Skill Help] Cross stitch waste canvas

HiI am planning on xstitching small pieces on my nieces clothings! can anyone please help me on which waste cancas 8.5, 12, or 14 counted is best used for childrend clothing? i havent used waste canvas before so i have no idea how it will wok!

Its been awhile since I used it (on towels) I used a 14 count and enjoyed stitching with waste canvas.

What exactly is 'waste canvas'? Like leftover scraps of aida cloth that you've cut yourself? I'm confused!

I use for children T-shirts and bags "leftover scraps of aida cloth" number 14.
