[Tips Discussion] How many threads for 20ct Aida?

Hi :)

I want to start a really large piece (for me) - Space Traveler by HAED. I dont know how many threads to use on 20ct Aida for better effect. I always used 1 thread when I worked with 20ct. But when I look closely, I can see a little of blank space - and its driving me crazy! On a small project it isnt so visible, but what with a bigger one? Use two threads? But when tried with 2, I couldnt pull the threads without damage (after a few stitches it looked like... worn out sweater).

Now I have a dillemma - start working with one thread and have hope that the blank spaces wont be big enough to see or choose two threads and have hope not to produce used carpet instead?

Please help me :)

On ct 18 I use two. On 20, I never tried.
Is it possible, that your pattern uses blended treads? Because then the answer is surely two...

Try  using the continental stitch or half cross with two strands and see if it covers.

Do a small patch on some scrap or  on the corner in a dark colour.  Make it a pretty solid piece of 2.5cm X 2.5cm.   Make sure its the darkest colour you will be using.  So it would be black.  Does it cover enough?  The continental isnt really used for cross stitch, its used more for tapestry and completely covers the back of the work in loops.  A google search would bring up a description. Mind you this will cost more in cotton floss, but may well be worth the extra cost if it covers well.

Wonderful idea when working from pattern, and not from kit.
If the work is a kit, maybe the floss will not be enough for this technique.

Hold your work out at arms length to see how it looks, too. Remember that HAED designs are very large. So while the white spaces may be very visible to you now as you work on a small section of the pattern, once its all done and viewed from a greater distance, it might not show as much.

Another tip Ive heard is to use off-white fabric to minimize the show-through, but Ive never tried it with a HAED.

I use 2 threads on 25 count for my current HEAD and I like the coverage.
