Now i have found this difficult to understand thedirections. So I decided to do a search for videos. Found 2 nice ones. One fromNew Stitch a day and the second one from very pink.
Now some patterns are worked from the top and some are worked from the bottom.I haven't seen any difference in the making of the tab. I will tell you this. Thereis more than one way of doing this some have you pick up stitches from the longside then the bind on stitches. Where others have you adding stitches by eitheryarn over’s or knitting in the front and back. I haven’t tried the method thatthis tutorial is going to talk about. The method i have done is very fussy. Ifyou don't do it right it doesn't look well. If i can find a video to givebetter instructions I will post it at a later date.
Ok here goes.
Cast on 3 stitches.
Knit6 rows. This should give you 3 ridges which we will work into next. Note:you may need to knit more. You want 3 rides on both sides Alsoit will be easier to start tabs with double point needles. Turnyour work 90 degrees clockwise and pick up one stitch in each of the garterridges that you created. Insert your working needle in the edge of the garterridge and knit into the stitch. Do this3 times. Picking up the purl stitches. This is why you need to have 3 ridges. Note:the first stitch you pick up is the first purl stitch next to where you havejust finished knitting. Turnyour work again 90 degrees clockwise and pick up three stitches along the edge. They may be a little difficult to see. You should now have 9 stitches. Theseare your cast on stitches. Ifyou pick up the stitches with your non-working needle then knit it, it will bea bit easier to pick up these stitches. Youcan make your garter stitch edge wider by increasing the number of cast onstitches. Just add an additional two rows of knitting in step 1 for eachadditional stitch cast on.
I hope i made this clear, so that you understand the directions.
Hope you found this informative and helpful :)
