I created this sampler by combining two different patterns I purchased on Etsy. I altered the patterns a bit by adding in some specialty stitches, beads, and metallic thread.
I think the satin stitch hearts are my favorite thing about it. I deliberately chose a cutesy alphabet to emphasize the contrast between the science fiction theme and traditional needlework.
At the top are two "blaster" guns. I used satin stitch on the blaster handles instead of cross stitches, and added a couple of French Knot buttons. Between the blasters is an Imperial TIE fighter. I did herringbone stitch with four strands of floss around the lettering for emphasis. I also used satin stitch to make the hearts rather than cross stitches. Next to the hearts (from the inside out) are an Algerian eyelet, two beads, and a Smyrna cross.
R2D2 and C3PO are stitched over one thread. I used tiny black beads for C3POs eyes and R2D2s "eye". I used a gold metallic blending filament on one color of C3PO to give him a little extra shine.
If youre not a Star Wars fan - in Espisode IV: A New Hope, Obi Wan Kenobi describes Mos Eisley Spaceport to Luke Skywalker by saying, "You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy." This sampler is meant to be a kind of "welcome" sign for my entryway (and also to be a joke). Im a huge, huge Star Wars fan, and love being able to incorporate that into needlework and stitching projects.
Note: This is my original work, but I do have a blog and have posted these pics on it before. So you may find them in one other place on the internet.
