How do you convert patterns into PC Stitch

Hi everyone,
This has been puzzling me for a while how people manage to put charts direct into say PC Stitch or other cross stitch software.  How do you do this, do you manually chart each stitch say off a Mirabillia chart or is there a way to import it.

There is an "import" function in these programs. Ive tried doing it and I cant get my imported pic to look like anything except a blob. Ive tried with lots of colors and with a few colors but always have the same result. Good luck if you try. There is a lot of "tweeking" to do before you have a final product.
