Suggestion for Moderators on Scanning Patterns

It would be really nice if the moderators would work with people to assist them in correctly uploading patterns.  I just scanned four patterns (this is only my second time scanning patterns at all and the first time I tried the pattern went through with no problem.  I am doing things just the same this time).  The first two have sat there for hours with no response and just in moderator status.  The third one was recycled due to an open file.  I would love to know what an open file is.  The directions tell you to use pdf format which I did for all attachments.  I only used a jpg for the image of the cover (that is also what the instructions tell you to do).  So where is the open file?

The fourth pattern I downloaded was recycled due to files being too small.  Since all of the leaflets I have scanned this evening started out the same size and all were scanned on the same scanner and converted to pdf form in the same manner I dont know how the file sizes could have differed.  I also could not find anything that told me what a minimum file size is.  I found the maximum but no minimum.

It takes a long time for a new person to the site to scan a pattern in.  It would be nice if the moderator would communicate with the member and assist them in correcting the file rather than recycling it.

I have hundreds of patterns that are not on your site and would love to upload them but I do not enjoy doing double work.  I made the effort to read all of the rules I even went and printed out the directions that someone else was nice enough to post on how to scan in patterns (the directions are somewhat out of date for the site as it is now though).  I tried to do things correctly because I want to share what I have with others.  But at some point someone needs to recognize that people need help.

Please moderators- work with people before rejecting what they are trying to load.  If people dont load patterns then none of us will have any to use.

@eddelweisse

All attachments can be up to 10mb each. They must be in rar, zip or pdf format. The pages cant be uploaded directly into the thread.  Please avoid posting each page as a pdf.  You can scan the pattern in jpeg format and then compress using WinRar or convert the entire pattern to one multi-page pdf file.

Thank you for sharing your patterns with us.

Hello,  I had similar problems when I started.  It does take awhile to figure out how things need to be done here.  If not familiar with zips & rars, like me, even longer.  My first post was also re-cycled.  I was quite upset..  but I figured it out.

The advantage of not having a bunch of smaller files is that each costs the downloader 30 coins each.

What I do with my PC is save all scans to desk top and then right click on desktop to get option of NEW.  The next pop up has option of Compressed File.  I create that and drag all my individual scans up, to 10mb, into that compressed file.  Hope this helps, I realize there are other options and different systems work differently.

Stick with it, it is worth it, this is an awesome site and all are quite friendly.  Moderators are volunteers and I am sure no time to help everyone personally but usually a user will pop in and help.

Anniekins,

Here is where the confusion is:

1). One of the patterns that you recycled was rejected due to the file size being too small, not too large.  You state the largest the file size can be but you dont state what the minimum size is and I cannot find it anywhere.  Also, I dont understand how the file size on this pattern could have changed from the others when it was the same to start, scanned the same and loaded the same.

2). The second pattern you recycled was due to an open file- I dont know what an open file is.  Can you please explain and tell me how to avoid them in the future.

3). In this thread you just stated that pages cant be uploaded directly into a thread.  I dont know what that means or how I did it or how I can avoid doing it in the future.

4). I would love to know how to combine pdf files together into one pdf, or jpg images together into one pdf as you suggest but do not know how.  Are there directions anywhere.

5). The thread that you asked me to read is actually out of date- I printed out and used that same thread when loading all of my patterns.  It was somewhat helpful but your site has changed and the instructions arent completely accurate.  Also they do not really address the issues above and how to do the things correctly.

Please if you will answer the questions as fully as you can.  I know that I am not the only one with this problem and it would really help alot of us.

Thank you,
eddelweisse

Just to update everyone; thank you to the three moderators who worked hard to compress my files & clean up the patterns so they could be posted. I really do want to get this right :)  Post time 2016-11-13 12:35

Thank you, JoyfulJt, for your suggestion.  I will give it a try.  I am using Windows 7 though so I dont know if it will work.  Do you already have a WinZip program on your computer?  I dont and I think this might be the problem.

I understand about the individual pdfs and not wanting to have to pay the 30 gold coins for several down loads.  I just dont know how to combine several pdfs into one or two.

I do agree with you the people I have met so far on the site are very nice and I love what has been brought together here.  I have told all of my friends and sent links in my facebook for the site.  I would just like to get it figured out because I know like me, they are crafters not computer programmers.

Thank you again,

Hi Eddelweisse,  I like you am not a computer programmer nor much of a wiz with this stuff.  I google most questions and there always the son whom I spent oodles of money putting thru college in computer programing.  that is if he has the time for poor old computer illiterate mom.   LOL

I use 7zip a free file compression program I downloaded several years ago and like it very much.

Good luck, am looking forward to the patterns you upload.

welcome Eddelweisse

what printer/scanner do you use??
the modern printers have the option: scan in jpg or pdf.

On the Internet there are many possibilities to convert jpg files in pdf for free.

Lots of demo versions for Winrar,Winzip.
convert jpg to pdf, convert pdf to jpg, in the net,
wih you can use for free and the eternity

an open file is a single jpg picture
wich will not be accepted by moderators

there is no limit size, small pictures can also be good
the preraus settlement is: clear picture, legible instruction

it also helps, if you read through the Forum Bulletin threads
Look here: this is an open file

I greet you warmly and wish you a lot succeed

Teign,

Thank you so much, that makes perfect sense.  When I uploaded the attachments they were all pdf but when I uploaded the image of the cover it was jpg because I thought that was what the instructions were telling me to do.

So just to make sure... even when I am uploading the "image" (which is usually the picture of the front cover of the leaflet) I need to be doing so in pdf form?

I thought that image was the picture of the cover of the pattern that would appear in the thread.  If it is pdf will people still be able to see it in the thread?

I do already have a free pdf converter that takes images from jpg to pdf.  What I was trying to figure out how to do is how to take several separate images and group them into the same pdf (this would be in lieu of a program like 7zip).

I had forgotten about 7zip, I used that a few years ago for zipping files and you are right it worked great.  I will see if I cant go find it again and give it a try.

At any rate, thank you for clearing up the mystery of the "open file."  I dont suppose you know anything about "loading pages directly into a thread"?  That was one of the things that I did (although I have no idea how I did it) and I need to know how not to do that in the future.

Thank you again,

eddelweisse
