Many years ago I stitched a cream coloured cat for my daughter. There were so many shades of white, cream, greys. It was difficult to tell them apart. That was my most difficult project.
Now I am thinking about doing a HAED project. Yes, they do look hard to do but so beautiful.
I check blogs for photos of HAED projects being stitched. I think I am ready to try for myself.

A difficult project for me would include lots of backstitching...I HATE it!  I know it will make the picture so much prettier so I get it done but I hate every minute of it.  To me, HAEDs arent hard just very time consuming.  Theres no backstitching or specialty stitches so Id choose a HAED over a Dimensions Gold kit, LOL;P

My most difficult one was Elizabeth R by Nostalgic Needle - I found it so hard - I had to make the lace for the collar and cuffs and I just about gave up. It was worth it though - its my favourite one I have made. I was full of strange stitches like detached buttonhole and lots of sequins on her dress. Its very sparkly on my wall and I always try to show it off - hahaha.

If I go into a chart knowing it is hard, I dont mind it.  Its the ones that spring up and bite you that annoy me.  I did Dimensions 16758 Tree Frog Trio.  Looks easy right?  Nothing too hard right?  That thing was a nightmare from the start.   Not enough materials were included to do it and not enough was included to mount it.  So I had to redo the kit.    It would not have been bad but I couldnt find those color numbers anywhere and they didnt say what floss they used.  GRRRRR.  So I had to rekit the colors with my choices.

Then I realized if you made ONE mistake, you had to rip out the entire frog because it would look deformed.  It is a very very precise chart.  There is no place to hide anything.  I dont mind ripping [ok so I do mind it but it isnt on my list of hates] but this was tedious.

When I finally got them done I added a saying.  "Well, I see we have been visited by the screw up fairy again."  at the bottom.  It fits the chart and the way it was stitched.  I hate that chart.

I found number two.  It looks simple.  Not many colors.  Some fractional stitching, back stitching.  It is a very sour looking woman in grey clothes wearing sensible shoes and holding a bright yellow brief case with a big bright smile face.  It says  "Have a nice day"
It is from an old Just Cross Stitch 1988.  I really like the chart but they did a horrible job of printing it.  It is small enough to be confusing on the face because the backstitches and fractionals all run together and cover each other up.  This is the second time I have started her.  I am backstitching her face before I do anything else because if that doesnt look right, shes in the trash.    Its a shame I really like the finished chart but even my magnifying glass doesnt make it clear enough with the way they printed it.

Edited to add: She went in the trash.  The backstitching looked horrible and nothing like the tiny finished picture [I used a magnifying glass].  However the photo was so small that even the glass wouldnt let me see how to do it properly.  So I tossed it.  After a week of trying to fix what should have been a weekend stitch, Im done.   No wonder people stopped cross stitching considering this magazine is one of the better ones.

It was the frogs that seduced me.

I mean look at those faces.

And that saying just fits in more ways than one.

I would never suggest one of their kits to my worst enemy... ok I admit... I would buy her the entire collection in stock and all the out of print ones I could find on ebay [evil snicker]
