An Amish style swift is a great option.

Ordered mine through amazon, ChiaoGoo Amish Design Wooden Yarn Swift. They have several options to choose from.

I'm flirting with the idea of buying one from aliexpress. Ladies in my knitting group have brought those pretty cheap red and white yarn winders and say those work fine.

I really only want to wind yarn cakes so I can dye them, so I guess those would be fine for me... but probably they are not heavy duty ones. :(

I have a reel that was my grandmother's! She is 40 years old but she is perfect. It keeps selling, you ask for manual winder. Although I do not know if it will be the same quality as that of the '70s. I saw some nice and cheap pages in China, but I really do not know the quality and if they work for a very intense use

I bought the Boye swift. It was terrible! I have resorted to using my knees to keep the hank tight and then wind into a ball. Its tricky but I was desperate ;P
