What is a digest?

Im sorry if this has been explained somewhere, but I cant find it. What does a digest consist of? The only mention I could find was a thread from 2009 that mentioned multiple patterns in a thread, but not exactly what a digest is supposed to be.
It appears that you can post cross stitch patterns individually from a magazine or a book, as well as in the whole magazine or book form. Would a digest consist of several patterns from one book? Im just confused as to what is considered a digest. Thanks for any info!

I know the word "Digest" only from whats happen after eating food ;P
But this is someting totaly different :)
