it is just a different method of attaching the feet.. some designer would have you crochet them in, others sew them on later. I actually quite like this idea though and might try it myself some time.
Ok, it looks like the feet you are making are not going to be stuffed. You need the two long tail ends to make sure they dont come off later on, when the ami is finished. Start as you normally would with a slip knot, but leave the dangly end a lot longer than you normally would. Now chain 4 as normal. Turn your work and place 3 half double crochet into the third chain from your hook, this will leave you with the last starting chain, slip stitch into this and fasten off, again leaving a long tail.
Now go to your body part, look where the foot needs to go and thread a needle with the first tail end, use this to fix the first side of the foot to the body, pull the yarn end through to the wrong side and leave it for now. Repeat for the other side, also pulling the tail end through to the wrong side, into the body. Now place several knots (i personally would knot the two ends together with 2 or 3 tight knots) and then either cut the remainder or just leave it hidden inside the body.
