I usually stitch a thread to show the center top to bottom, then another side to side.  This is to make sure the design is centered.  I do not have any fancy hoops.  I did once have a frame made of wood that had rollers on the top and bottom.  It kept everything taunt.

Я пользуюсь разметкой с помощью нити, фламастеры и карандаши  слишком не надежны и оставляют следы.

It is better to use scroll frames for large project. It can refrain from the dirt for the cloth.Though, you need to practice alot because you feel a little bit unease if you used to stitch on hand.

Large designs (haed etc) i have started top left corner and gridded as i needed (per page).  Now though, i buy pre gridded.  I use frames, as I cannot hold so much fabric without losing patience.  If im tired, i just stitch something smaller that evening, in hand.  I dont always like sitting at a frame.
