Triptych is a crescent shaped shawl which uses three contrast colours in three different yarn weights : DK, fingering and lace. It is a triptych of weights in one gauge. Of course it would also look lovely as a “regular” shawl worked in your preferred weight using one or multiple colours ! But the pattern sample alternates the three yarns and works as a tool for knitters who want to understand gauge and get rid of some common misconceptions surrounding it.
Triptych shows how one gauge looks using different weights of yarn : you will get a more open, drapey fabric with finer yarns, and a denser, warmer fabric with thicker yarns. The relaxing stockinette beginning lets you look at your knitting to appreciate each weight’s density. The cable pattern is easy to keep track of and lays very well flat thanks to increases in the diamond shapes. The crescent finishes with a fine garter border that can be blocked in points.
