My mother-in-law turned 70 this year. She has taken me in like her own daughter since day one, so I wanted to make something that is one-of-a-kind and tailored just for her. Like most moms, her kids and grandkids have been the center of her life. So, I made this Scrabble Afghan with her names of her kids and grandkids spelled out. The names of hubby and his sister intersected with each other because they are siblings, and their children branched out from their names. The afghan is square shaped and is slightly wider than a Queen Size bed. The afghan was joined together with 225 squares (SC stitch squares with border and letters in bubble stitches). I used SC joining stitch to have a raised ridge in between each square, and the outer border contains Folding SC to compliment the 3D look. I started planning this project right after Christmas last year and started working on it in January. However, I got so burnt out with this project after a few months, I had to take a break from it by starting other projects (Hubby couldn't understand it, but I told him it's legit for most knitters and crocheters). Finally, my slacking caught up with me, and I had to pull a Speedy Gonzales for 3 weeks to finish the afghan. It took me about 6 months from planning to finish. The outcome is better than I anticipated, but I think I'm on a long break from big projects for a while. The look on mom's face is worth all the hard work, but my poor thumb and wrists beg to differ.
