how to dye fabric

I have some RIT dye that I would like to use.  I want a very light color, sort of "marbled" look, not one solid color.  Does anyone know how?

I have never done it but saw this on the net:
Use one teaspoon of the dye, 1 cup of hot water (140 degrees Fahrenheit) and 1 tsp. salt. Dissolve the dye and salt into the water. Dab damp paper towels in the dyed water, and dab it onto your fabric. Make sure to wring out excess dye in the towel before dabbing, unless you want a darker color.

I really want to try dyeing, too.  Theres so many colors that I cant find at my local craft shop and it would make the piece more detailed/personal if I could dye it myself.  
My husband would hate me if I got dye all over the kitchen, though. hehe :L

holy gadzooks, that looks amazing, Arwen!  The color of your dye even matches your stitches!  You want to come over and dye all my fabrics for me?
