I highly recommend buying a clear plastic boxes for threads. DMC makes them, but you can easily find non brand ones for much cheaper. I had been using four (!) of such boxes for years now, and I love them. All thread are nice and neatly organized : )

They look nice on the bobbins though. Mine are in a big, double sided thread box. So nice to have it all together.

Have you ever put them on a key chain ring in order of shades?  I find that helps me.
