Have you ever crochet something by just looking at a picture ?

Hi there,


as the title say, i crocheted something just by looking at refrence picture, and i have been doing it for a while rather than buying the pattern, especially if the pattern written in a diffrent langugae than mine, so what do you think about this ? does it count stealing the pattern or the idea or design ?

im afraid if i ever crocheted something the artist behind the idea might attack me of stealing it if i ever posted on instgram or youtube or any site .

Theres a story about how young Mozart copied an entire choral work note for note after only hearing it once. He wasnt accused of stealing and instead was celebrated for his genius.

I think it shows your skill and talent if you didnt need the pattern to crochet the design. Afaik in many countries you cannot copyright an idea, only the expression of it. In this case its the pattern itself that is copyrighted, and since you didnt steal the pattern its probably not stealing in a legal sense. That said, it might be frowned upon if you claim the design as your own. You can always credit the original designer for inspiring your piece.

i thought about crediting the creator however ive see a creator who attacked someone of copying the pattern even tho the pattern is not for sale, that what made me scared about the idea, thank you so much your comment made me really happy <3

There will always be people who dont like what you do, but we cant please everyone. Imo if youve properly credited them as the original creator and thanked them for sharing their inspiring images, them complaining about someone copying them just makes them look petty. Its not like youre claiming its your own design.

Ive seen online posts of peoples knitted items where they mention that they didnt buy the pattern and just copied the pic, like you did. Didnt see any complaints from the creator or other posters.

I  have never been able to do so! A pattern is a must for me and preferably a written out one over just a chart. I think it is lovely if you are able to and as long as it is for personal use (so no making money off of it) why not! :)

I like to combine both sometimes. Sometimes I will start with a pattern, but then I see a picture of something else that I want to change/add to the pattern (I.e. I like the ears or face more than what was used in the pattern). So I will make those changes based on what the pic looks like.

Ofcourse its not stealing. You were just inspired from their design and no one can accuse of you on such a thing. There are some designers in Turkey that they tried to accuse of other crocheters but they could do nothing except being funny with their arguments...
