Designing patterns

I cross stitch Christmas Stockings for new family members, whether by birth or marriage.  I would like to start to design my own patters to make them more personal.

Any recommendations on how to start?

Well, it might be a good way to start with the 3 best patterns you already have and work your way up from those designs and measures. Just fill it in with your own creativity.
For example:
1. Take one pattern that has the best outside size.
Make that your own design standard.
2. Take one that has a nice set of letters / alphabet.
Develop your own taste and lettering set from that.
3. Take one that has some motifs you very much like.
Scandinavian / Classic christmas / funky / soft pastels....

This way you develop your own style that everyone reckognizes.

What I do is I find a nice pattern/picture on the internet and graph it to make my own designs.   I use pattern maker for most of my
home made designs.

Thanks this is what I do too.  I will take the dog out of the designers pattern and put one in that looks more like the persons pet.  I have also taken a picture of Santa riding a pink flamingo and turned it into a sock adding sand and ocean to the picture.
