Can you learn to knit with socks?

Hello Knitters,

I would like to ask for some advice.
First of I am a crocheter and never knitted in my life, but I love knitted socks.
Therefore I wanted to teach myself how to knit, but I want to start with socks and skip the usual beginner patterns like scarfs.

Is it possible to learn knitting with socks?
Would it be wise to start with this special sock needles, like addi Crasy trio?
Are there other needles that are more beginner friendly?


Any help or tips would be welcome.

Thanks for the answer. I used the following days to learn some basics.
Since I couldnt find a beginner-friendly hat pattern I just started with a sock yesterday, more for training than anything else.
I am using 5 DPN needles, a thicker yarn and a sock knitting table. I still havent reached the heel, so the worst is yet to come :D

In order to knit a sock you need to Learn to Cast on, Knit, Purl, Knit flat, Knit in the round, Pick up sts, decrease, Bind off. Thats for a Top down sock. Now, how do you intend to knit a sock? With Double pointed Needles, 2 Circular needles, or 1 long circular for Magic loop method.. Knitting a sock requires Gauge Swatching first for Proper fit, so your sock isn’t too tight, or too loose and fall down. These are things you should know upfront before knitting a sock.

I just started a christmas bauble on two DPN to learn the increase and decrease stitches and am currently searching for a hat pattern I like and that is worked with round needles.

I think you can find very good examples to follow on youtube so its clear to understand. That is how I learned to crochet in my old days, never done it before and now in my old day learned it by youtube,,,
And in the last few years made a lot of beautiful things.

I tried a round needle and a wrist warmer pattern, but the weirdly flexible needles and the constant changes from knit to pure stitches drove me nuts.
Therefore I ended up using my biggest pointed needles and some really thick yarn and just did a few knit and pure rows to get used to the stitches.
I think I will gradually start and first do some legwarmers and maybe some yoga socks, before I process with socks.

My advice would be a hat in a DK weight. It is a much faster project, with stitches you can actually see and a good practice for ribbing and decreases.

My first knit project was the Wurm hat, which is a free pattern. Not DK, but a nice first project!
