It all depends on the size of grid Im stitching on. Mostly it is a size 24 for 14 count aida fabric.

I use size 26 tapestry needles as I mostly stitch on 16-count Aida I find the opening isnt too small that you cant thread the needle and it can pass through the cloth smoothly.  You need to look for a tapestry needle suitable for the cloth you are using.
