Thank you for joining the conversation.
I fully understand the issues with downloading a pattern, and BoingBoings explanations were both thorough and clear (to me at least).
But, for starters, let me introduce myself. I am 62 years old, an economist who for the greater part of my professional career worked in the IT sector and a.... crazy knitter. Knitting is more than just a hobby for me.
I.... discovered this forums url by searching through yandex and not google (since it has been banned by google).
Now with the issue at hand. From both yours and BoingBoings explanation it is evident that the system is keeping a log for the downloads, but because of... VPNs, proxies, Chrome issue, etc. plus the extra download made by moderators, downloads do not (necessarily) represent sales. But, these same issues may "work" the other way around (especially with the 7day lag), i.e. understate actual sales vis a vis credited sales.
Therefore, for reasons beyond a members control, one could end up paying twice (or more) in attempting to download a purchased pattern. And if it is just one file, its ok lets say, but when it is multiple files !! Same is the case, when one purchase is downloaded by two or more members. In the first scenario the forum is receiving the download costs (and sometimes multiples of), in the second neither the forum nor the uploading member are secured. In both cases the members (downloading and uploading one) are "punished" for reasons beyond their control.
