Fingering weight yarn is held double to produce a DK weight. Any fingering or DK weight yarn, at any price point, can be substituted so long as gauge is met. If you want to make the table runner wider or narrower, simply add or subtract stitches to your cast-on. The lace edges of the table runner are a fixed number of stitches, but adding or subtracting stitches to the cast-on will change the number of stitches in the center stockinette panel. Additionally, it is easy to make the table runner longer or shorter by adding or subtracting one or more pattern repeat.
