Perfect Pocket Shawl - Help with adjustment length

Ok crochet fundis, I am having a terrible time trying to adjust this shawl length.  I would welcome suggetions/maths help or fool proof way to adjust the length.

The pattern says:

My shawl measures 56”. My model is 5’8”. (so shawl is 2" shorter than models height)

GAUGE: Focus on a close gauge for stitch counts (11 hdc = 4”). It defines the shawl’s length.

Row height is not as important, as it defines the shawl’s width.

Width is easily adjusted by adding / subtracting rows.SIZE ADJUSTMENTS: How many of your hdc stitches measure 4”? We will call that number “x”. Divide your desired length in inches by 4. Multiply that number by “x”. That is how many base chains you need (must be an odd number). For width, add or subtract wrapped dc rows.

Base Chain 157sts

My measurements for pattern:

My model is 5 4"

Her wing span is 58" (when I take this measurment it is much longer than the Base Chain above using Gauge and Size Adustments)

My gauge is perfect at 11 stitches per inch (I have done 4 swatches)

I would like the shawl to fit as per pattern and not have the pockets hanging by the knees

How do I apply the SIZE ADJUSTMENTS if I dont know the length I want the shawl to be? (Its not for me!)

How do I work out what width I would like it to be by adding or subtracting rows. (As mentioned it is not for me)

There must be a simple way to figure this out but I am just not seeing it.  I have done the calulations and its so NOT working!!

The only thing I can come up with is:

11sts = 1 inch / my model is 4 inches shorter / therefore I minus 4" (44sts) from base chain??

Once that is all figured out I would like to make the shawl again and again.  For  6 male and a 7 year old child

I am not sure about what you wish to do. Are you wanting to take from the arms width or from the neck down? If its not possible to alter the pattern itself have you thought of a different yarn or hook? Chunky for the man and dk for the child? I give you congratulations for achieving perfect tensions. This is something I cant achieve in crochet so I am not able to make garments for adults where children are not as crucial. But changing the yarns and hooks sometimes helps me. I hope it helps you to maybe.

@Duckeyd Thanks so much for your reply and trying to help.  Sorry it sounds so confusing, I will try to make more sense.  The pattern is for one size only and this is what the designer’s formula is for adjusting pattern to make it bigger or smaller – taken from FB.

1. The model is 5’ 8” tall
2. Finished length of pattern is 56” With fringe 70”
3. Base chain is 157ch
3. Gauge is 11 sts to 4 inches using hdc.

My question for adjusting for a taller or shorter persons are:

1. Without using the formula because I have no idea of the length for various size people,
how do I adjust length?  I have used to formula and coming up with weird numbers.
2. Is it simpler to add or subtract from base chain?  
ie: from designer’s pattern model is 5’ 8’
base ch is 157
gauge is 11 sts to 4”
3. Since my gauge is correct I am assuming (without using Formula) that my model is 4” shorter I have to minus 4” from base chain and since my gauge is correct that means I have to deduct 11 stitches from base chain?
4. Am I thinking correctly or am I missing something using the formula?

Final notes from me - I would like to know how to adjust the base chain from kiddies size to an adult of 6 plus without having the shawl pockets hanging by the knees or alternativly sitting at waist length.  
Is there a way to use the formula if I dont know the length I am supposed to be making? Is there a hidden trick to figuring out the length I am supposed to make taking into consideration peoples different heights?

3. Gauge is 11 sts to 4 inches using hdc.


1. My friend is: 6 tall (72") (random figure, this could be for any height person)
2. Then I deduct 2" for finished length (this could be the Formula designer wants us to use?)

This is just an attempt and I have to make two restrictions: I didnt download the pattern and I have to do the calculation in cm.
First, I would calculate the desired scarf length using the ratio of original scarf length to original body size:
"original scarf length" divided by "original body size" multiplied by "real body size" = "desired scarf length".

original scarf length: 56 = 142.2 cm (142 cm)
Original body size: 58 = 172.7 cm (173 cm)
real body height: 54 = 162.6 cm (162 cm)

desired scarf length: 142 cm / 173 cm x 162 cm = 134 cm = 53

required number of stitches: 11 stitches / 10cm x 134 cm = 147,4 (147 stitches)
