I am embrassed to say I havent knitted in over a year - its all been crochet.  Yesterday I decided to go through my yarn stash and use up all my odd balls (with the same ply) and decided to knit this little beauty up in stripes.  www.pindiy.com/forum.php?mod=vie ... ght=Bookworm%2BvestI printed the pattern to discover it is knitted in the round.  While this is not a problem for me I would perfer to knit it flat because of the stripes I would like to add and I dont want to navigate all the color changes if I knit in the round.  Yup, I am being lazy but I just want some mindless knitting in stocking stitch while watching Netflix and of course the stipes must match without jogging so knitting flat is the answer for me!  I know the sleeves and neckline must be done in the round which is fine and also because its one colour.

I Googled on any hints to convert circular to flat knitting and came up with nothing to help.

What I would like to know is there anything I should be made aware off before I start?

1. My gauge is correct (to fit a 12 year old)
2. Cast on (in round) is 168sts (so cast on for back and front is 184sts each)

Do I cast on a few extra stitches on the side to compesate in converting to flat knitting?  Its not important to have an exact size as I am not making this for anyone special and will adjust length accordingly if chest size comes out for a 14 year old.

Have I got my thinking cap on correctly you clever knitters?  Any other suggestions you might have from going from circular to flat knitting for this simple vest which is just going is just going to be stocking stitch.  Flat Knitting: 1st plain, 2nd side purl. Armhole, neck and bottom in ribbing.

Hope you have a super weekend ♥

Depending on the method of sewing the piece I would add an extra stitch each side for sewing.   I would also suggest you find a pattern for a vest that is knitted on straight needles, in case you need to pick up stitches around the arms and neck.
A small womans vest pattern will also work in exchange for a boys size 12 as an example.   This will provide you with the necessary clues to move forward.   Good luck!

PS Im a petite small and most of the knitting patterns I find are larger than a 32 inch bust.   Ive never tried to reduce all of the lovely patterns to fit me, but this is exactly what I would do if I ventured to shrink down a pattern.

I collect Vest patterns so looked through my 1.5gigs of vests. Petite Knit came the closest but knitted from neck down using one color. Adding stripes from neck down makes me nervous!  Post time 2022-4-3 03:04

Id frankly do the the stripes on the round (search for jogless stripes in youtube).

You can also see a similar project on the round here: Sea Glass Tee by Wool & Pine
