What I always wanted to know
at the moment, many designers are presenting their autumn/winter collections on Ravelry.
Lots of new jackets and jumpers, shawls and socks.
Do these designers knit their models themselves, or do they just design them,
using electronic programmes to work out the instructions?
Or do they employ extra knitters? paid workers?
I think its a mix of both to be honest. I think many have to find the right "fit" for their designs and patterns (knit their own) then they give the finished written pattern and or graph to expert knitters to break down the pattern to see if there are any issues, mis-interpretations, missing details etc.
Thank you Lou-Anna, for your answer. I always thought it cant be that a designer knits 5 jumpers in such a short time So there are other professionals involved, that explains a lot

They have both test knitters that knit the pattern before it is released to catch any mistakes.
Some designers also have paid sample knitters.
It really depends on how big the designer is and if she backed up by a yarn brand.

Sometimes they make there own samples or use test knitters. There are also tech editors that go through the pattern and make sure it makes sense. Many, if it is a multiple size pattern, use multiple test knitters for the different sizes.
All of the designer projects that Ive "worked" on have had a sample already completed and many state that the pattern has been tech edited. They are basically getting more eyes on the pattern to look for clarity, errors, etc and to get multiple sizes completed along with exposure at launch. Many ask for pics to be posted of completed works for their promotion use (with links back to their sale page). Some ask for postings on social media with tags on launch day.
The ones I know, start designing the pattern themselves, then send it to an editor to check for errors etc. Simultaniasly test knitters start knitting the pattern in several sizes and give feedback. It takes a few weeks to months to complete this!
I know of at least one designer who wrote up patterns, and did not test knit or have it edited before posting. What you see of the pattern is what you got, and then the people who decided to knit the design, were the tech editors. Its up to each designer to decide what they want to do before posting a pattern, whether it be test knit, tech edited, and how they want to accomplish it. Even in knitting patterns its buyer beware.
