Steeks - What Patterns Are Your Favorite?

I want to try steeking a fair isle cardigan, but Im having a hard time picking a pattern to knit.  There are just so many really great patterns out there.  What is your favorite pattern to steek, whether it be cardigan, blanket, or something else?  Do you machine sew, crochet, or felt your steek?

I did this technique once with a cardigan in a classic norwegian pattern. I sealed it with a sewing machine and its still fine today! I thinks its important, to use rather robust wool for such a project - too fine and Id be scared it will unravel.

First of all: have you ever steeked a knitted piece before?
You should try that first and familiarize yourself with the technique. You can use any yarn for this. The most important thing is to secure the steek well before you cut. Pure wool (such as Jamiesons) usually doesnt need to be secured. You can felt the steek briefly beforehand and then cut it open. Securing with crochet hook also works, but I have had some unpleasant experiences with it myself. The smoother the yarn is, the more likely it is to be secured with a sewing machine. Per side to the center stitch per 2 seams is usually sufficient.
I would first start with a cardigan with a round yoke in stranded knitting. Check out two patterns from Randi K. Design: Klatrerosa and Mosedott. They are perfect for getting started and very well explained.

This whole steeking idea scares me.  I really, really dont like the idea of cutting up my hard work.  But if I had the resources I might try one, and if I was thinking of spending
loads of money on wool etc., I would do a test pattern first to understand the steps in scrap before I took on the project.  But that is just me.  There are many wonderful patterns
that require steeking.   Good luck!

My first steeked cardigan was maja cardigan - free pattern. Im now knitting another cardigan and will steek using crochet method. As long as you pick the right yarn, theres really nothing to worry about.
