I hope this makes sense.

Work 1 row with the first stitch in the SAME stitch as joining stitch.

Work next row, SKIP join stitch and work around with last stitch ending in the skipped join stitch.

Work next row same as the first, working it in the SAME as the join.

Alternating these 2 rows through the pattern.

if I understand
in the first row I knit the first stitch.
on the second following row I skip the first stitch of the previous row
on the third row, I knit the first skipped stitch of the second row.
I repeat the last two rows.
