Query about Blocks and Extensions

Hello, everyone! Im not exactly new to crochet but Im not familiar with a lot of the terminology used. What is the difference between blocks and extensions? I recently came across the following patterns Wildflower Block and High Tea Extension among others and Im not sure I get why both patterns are needed.

Extension generally means an alteration/addition to an existing pattern

Ooohhh I get it so the block is the centre piece and the extension is the addition to that middle bit. Thank you very much!
