weird question about mitered squares

hello!
I have a random question about mitered squares.
so I cast on random number of stitches - say, 33 - and I knit as per pattern.
do I end up with a square no matter how many stitches I cast on? or theres an algorythm dictating how many stitches there should be to end up with a square?

If you cast on 33 stitches, you should end up knitting 33 rows, unless your pattern is more clever than I am now?

I guess I need to investigate more, I only just thought about stitches, completely missed on the row thing, lol

Once you are done your knitting, you will need to block as well.  Some yarns just do not shape as well as others.  Once you are done blocking, your squares will look like squares, especially if you are doing individual blocks to join up latter and not the join as you go method.
