Cant create new threads to upload materials?

Hi - I cant create a new thread with materials, e.g. in knitting. I keep getting a pop-up message telling me that I have to set an avatar before performing the operation. I tried it and set a new picture, but I still get the same error message when I try making a post. What could I be doing wrong? Thanks for any advice that you may have!
