If you live in the US, there are Facebook groups where people give away things they no longer want for free. You could ask for yarn there?

And inflation is just killing any of my Yarn is Catnip activities. Price increases of at least 30%. Now I only buy on sale + use fingering weight yarn (cheapest yarn weight.)

I agree that its not cheap, but when time is taken into account i would say its not that bad.  The time investment makes it okey.
