I find that tastes tend to change with time. When I first started crocheting I collected amigurumi patterns as mad. Time passed I havent made anything from my collection. Moreover I moved on to other items - doilies, blankets. Amigurumi I still crochet, but only if its a very nice design. Most amigurumi look painfully the same, nothing that can catch my eye now

At first take the time to look around. After that you can decide what things you like to crochet, and later on you find a designer wich fits you the most.
I dont have a favourite designer, I make what I like to make at that moment and search for a good pattern.
