Well, my issue was that the first row (the one worked on the foundation chain) used to curve outwards, like forming a bow. I learned that this is due to the difference of actual tension between the foundation chain and the stitches (usually single crochets) in the first row itself. A couple of months ago I came across a great tip that blew up my mind cause its soooo simple.
Tip: you just have to size up your hook one whole number for the foundation chain. I.e. youre going to use a 3 mm hook for your project --> crochet your foundation chain with a 4 mm hook.
It sounds crazy (for me it did), but I promise it works. The foundation chain will look too loose at first, but once you work the first row it will tension and youll get a straight edge. This tip works whether youre working your first row on the back loop of the chain or on the third loop (dont know how the bar hidden behind the chain is called).
