Hi all, cheap crochet hooks vs expensive hooks

Are the more expensive crochet hooks really worth buying?

In my opinion not really. Unless you need a specific grip because of hand pain problems, any hook is fine. The thing you have to be pay attention to is how well the yarn may slide on them, but also this is personal preference. For example I dont really like the feeling of plastic hooks and tend to prefer metal or wood ones, but if I need a unusual hook size that I know I wont be using much, Ill go for the cheap plastic ones

I guess it would depend on what you mean by expensive, and your personal preferences. I have severe carpal tunnel and have tried nearly every hook available. I can crochet longer, and with less pain and numbness, when I use a Clover amour hook (around $7-10 per hook). My priciest hooks ($50-70 per hook) were absolutely not worth the cost- I tried them, didnt work for me, and banished them to a drawer (but they do look nice in photographs!). For me, the Clover amours were one of the best crochet purchases I have ever made.  

Even the cheapest hooks can be made more comfortable, or usable, by doing simple hook hacks- like adding a mushy grip, or adding Fimo handles etc

Thankyou, I only have cheap ones, I’ve heard good things about clover hooks, I might just have buy one and see how it feels

The thing i noticed most with some of the super cheap one (around one-two euro for a set of mutiples) is that the metal is poor quality and super rough. This catches on the yarn a lot and makes working with them super hard. You can see scuff marks on them in the metal and even feel them with your fingers.
I have had great experience with the tulip hooks and I love them a lot. They are in the mid range with hooks around 12-15 euros. I have also really like the knitpro waves, those are also less expensive with a set of 9 being around 35-40 euro.

well, where I live even the very simple cheap ones are pretty pricey imo, you hardly can get one below 3,50€.
My US-friend used to send me some, she said, theyre available in every supermarket for little money.
Those are these coloured metal hooks.
Since my health issue, I cant use them anymore & need something with "a handle" so the cheap ones are gone for me.

In recent years the prices for yarn, fabric, needles & other supplies you need are risen sharply.
I am now thinking carefully about what project I do or better, can afford.

Hi :) Ive been working with a cheap amazon set (the standard colorful one with the chubby grip) for a while and any project came out just fine and I only have pain in my wrists if I work for hours without stopping or stretching.. I tried my grandmas sets, made with wood and I cant really tell a difference. As others said, more expensive sets are worth it if you have specific concerns (need wider or softer grips), or really like the aestethic :)

Yes its worth to try. In my case, its the hook and grip is way better than cheap one. Its smooth, doesnt make the yarn stuck, & more comfortable grip.
