Hi! Ive known coelacanths since I was a little child. Coelacanths were thought to be extinct until a living specimen was found in the late 1930s and theyre one of the most interesting extant fish species, for a number of reasons:
- They have much the look of prehistorical fish = they look similar to fish species that are now only found as fossils
- They have lobulated fins in contrast to the radiated fins of most fish species. These lobulated fins are thought to be more closely related to extremities from an evolutionary point of view than radiated fins. This means they are closer than other fish to the animals that conquered dry land for the first time.
- They have two dorsal fins, which is a rarity among modern fish.
(I hope youre considering by now to start loving coelacanths!)
There was no way I could find a crochet pattern for a realistic coelacanth, so I had to design it myself!
Probably not the cutest animal, nor the cutest amigurumi. But one of the things I like is to find attractiveness in animals that are considered ugly.
Anyway, in case of being called @ugly@ just because of her appearence (shes a female), she would rather feel proud about her natural ugliness. Shes just as ugly as a real coelacanth, which is something to feel proud of ;P
The design process was not the easiest and I ended up with a product that I would consider suitable at least for an advanced beginner. The lips are just chains that are buried into the amigurumi and then secured to the jaws with sewing thread, all of which took almost an hour to complete. Hope you like it!
