Im fairly new as well and was just as confused.
From what I have learned, you need to collect gold coins and use them as a "payment" method to buy patterns. Patterns have different prices, Ive seen a price range of 10-500.
You can earn coins by being active. There is a list of actions taken to earn coins, along with a breakdown of how much you will earn and how often.
You can find it by going to where it says "Credits:_" near your avatar on the upper right side of your screen and clicking on "Points Manage" where all the little tabs are at.
You can also earn gold coins by looking through the Bounty Area, this is a list where you and others can post/request a pattern you are in search of. You are, however, required to offer a bounty (or reward amount) in exchange for the requested pattern.
In turn, if you have a pattern that someone is searching for, you can post the pattern. You will need to make sure it has not been posted already. If it hasnt, you will receive the bounty reward for that pattern. This is a much faster way of earning gold coins.
You can also post your own patterns here and have a set "price", so others can "purchase" your pattern, and you will be earning gold coins for every "sale" you make.
Im still learning myself, but I hope this helps you get started.
