Is it possible to ever get downgraded to a lower DIY level?
for example is there penalties or if you spend too much pins, etc.

Thanks in advance.

User group depends on credits only.   I got this explantation from @ChrisPBacon:
Credits= (#posts x .1) + (#threads x .26) + (#digests x 5) + (online time / 1.5)
This means for every 4 threads you post, you will get 1 credit increase towards the next user level.
Post more patterns --> increase your credits --> increase your user level

Hope this helps :)

Spending Pin is actually something good as it keeps the forum alive. So no you can't be "downgraded" or "punished" for spending too much Pin. On the contrary, the forum is laid out to entice your spending.

Meanwhile, downgrading from a user level to the level below is very rare but not completely impossible.
Say, for instance, that you are 1 credit away from becoming DIY.2, and that you get that remaining credit by (mistakenly) posting a duplicate. Whenever a member of the mod team deletes your duplicate post, you automatically lose the Pin and credits that you earned through this post (only those that you earned, there is no "fine" : mistakes happen).
Because your duplicate is deleted, you would get back to DIY.1... but still be 1 post away from DIY.2.
So yes, technically it is possible to go back to a lower level, although it is very rare and pretty much unsignificant.

Aside from this peculiar case, any update to the formula used to calculate credits (happened for the last massive update) may impact each member's level. But that's even more rare than the case described above.

All put together: don't worry, go for that pattern you've been eyeing on and have fun :-)
