The best way to gain credits (which determine your level) is to be ACTIVE on the site.
This is the equation that determines the number of credits you have:
CREDITS = Replies x .1 + Threads x .26 + Digests x 5 + Online time / 1.5
As you can see:
10 replies = 1 credit
4 threads = 1 credit
1.5 hours of active site time = 1 credit
"Digest" is designated by a moderator for a pattern, book, or magazine that is very popular or brand new. You cannot count on earning this designation.
Note, you will often see "posts" instead of "replies" listed in the equation. These are the same thing.
I still haven't figured out the problem with emoticons.
Emoticons from the keyboard don't work for me either. But I've seen that some users use them somehow. Emoticons from the editor also behave very badly. They work in one browser, but in another you have to copy the link to the emoticon and paste it into the post.
Also, I noticed that people here don't really like emojis.
Hourly tasks only bring you pins. They do not affect credits. Credits are affected by posts. 10 posts with "Thank you" = 1 credit. To get 11 credits you need to say "Thank you" 110 times.
keep posting a lot... Your credits will increase better if you post patterns as this means you create a thread, and then you get the opportunity to answer each person that says "thank you".
But you can simply post "thank you" everywhere as many people do.
