Elongated knitting fabric

It happens to me all the time that the pieces I knit seem like elongated. I mean, they are @taller@ compared to the @width than they should be, which give them an elongated look. I think it's because I have the wrong amount of tension (probably too much)... and I say too much because I don't think it's too little because it happens the same to me in crochet.

But in the last few days I've been thinking about something. I usually knit amigurumi and I've gotten to that impression by comparing my knitted fabric (unstuffed) vs the actual stuffed piece... and that's what has lead me to the impression that my fabric is elongated. But then I've realised that knitting behaves in a different way than crochet does: knitted fabric is much more elastic. Could it be that my impression is wrong and that everything will be fixed by itself when I stuff the piece?

Thanks for your advice.

Hi, it's true. When you crochet the fabric tends to be more tight and while knitting the fabric tends to be more fluid. Have you tried to make with a smaller needle?

It sounds like your stitches are too loose therefore creating the elongation. Try making the stitches a bit tighter, or use one size smaller needles to see if that helps. The smaller needles may not eliminate the elongated stitches though, if they are still too loose.

Well... I don't think my stitches are too loose. I have even trouble making the needle through them and there are no holes to be seen :S ... and by the way, same happens when I crochet.

My actual question was: could it be that the actual piece gets wider once it's stuffed?
