k – knit. p – purl. K2tog – knit two together. M 1 – make one stitch by picking up the horizontal loop before the next stitch and knitting it into the back of it. Knit as you go - knit the knits and purl the purls (work the stitches as they appear). Yo - the yarn is passed over the right-hand knitting needle. See photo 2. Edge st – edge stitch (slip 1 stitch at the beginning of the row and purl 1 at the end of the row). 4-st left cable – slide 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in back of work, knit 2, knit 2 from cable needle. 4-st right cable – slide 2 stitches to cable needle and hold in front of work, knit 2, knit 2 from cable needle.
