too right, I was so angry when they ditched the kernick threads & their mill hill selection is so lame, its a joke! Buying at shows is a great idea, (note to self) must remember to go to the next one (havent been in ages). Have you ever done any internet shopping for threads and stuff? I get a catalog via email from an internet shop based in Gosford, NSW but I havent bought anything there as yet, (prices seem a bit steep, tbh).

I dont buy a lot from online. I keep in contact with a group called sewitall who stock fabrics which are good quaility and a pretty good price, but i usually only buy from them during shows, i like to look at stuff like that before i purchase. Im going to the craft show in sydney during march... im pretty sure it is anyway , cause theyll have a store there...and i so need some more speciality fabrics...only have som rustic, gold inlaid, ivory and white left. I used to buy a lot from the fox collection catalogue...but their prices have gone through the roof lately

I remember the fox collection from years ago, but Ive been "out of the loop" due to bad health for a bit so I havent been to the main show at Rose Hill (thats the one in March, isnt it?) You are such a wealth of information Phoenixdark, Ive been looking all over for a local supplier of pretty cross stitch fabrics because I really admire the way some ladies take a mass produced pattern and tailor it to make it totally unique and individual; a specialty fabric is an important part of that process.  I really need to thank you very much for being so helpful and  generous with everything:  information, charts, techniques....youre so sweet!

Youre more than welcome. Well Sewital has heaps of fabrics at pretty good prices, you can check their website and look at colours and prices, I usually find theyre craft show prices to be better, but you actually have to go to the craft show then.
Yeh it is the Rosehill racecourse show. Although theres usually 2 different ones held there each year. We used to always go to the one held in August, The Stitches and Craft Show, but apparently they went down the drain or something this year, so it didnt get held. The one in March (10th - 13th) is Craft Expo, which I havent been to before, but the material guy is going to be there, and there is usually heaps of beads so I take descriptions of mill hill beads that i need and try to match as best I can.
I have a lady on ebay I talk to bout mill hill beads, although I havent actually purchased off her, shes in America, but she stocks basically all the mill hill beads, and sells bead packs that shes put together herself for quite a few different pattern makes including mirabilia and lavender and lace. Although sometimes it works out to be round the same price as spotlight...she just has more. 4mysunshines is her seller name and Susannes Little Corner is her shop.
Not a problem, if your after any info or a particual pattern just ask!

Ive just checked out Sewital online & found that they have the fantasy range of aidas...OMG! YAY! I would never thought it possible to get them over here.  I really would like to see those little beauties so Im hoping to make the March Show. Im confused about the August show being canceled though, it was a HUGE success the years I went, heaps of people gathering about & the most amazing crafts on display ever (stuff Ive never heard of, lol, one year I even purchased a smocking machine ~now all I need to do is to find it! rofl)
Sewital also stocks  those lovely cross-stitch ready afghans, which is so hard to find (so impressed!); my friend is expecting twins so I would really like to make her a couple of cross stitch keepsakes.
Phoenixdark, youre a total darling, thank you ever so much!

    lol youre more than welcome.
The August show this year got cancelled. The problem was with the admin side. They listed it up as being on the 2nd last weekend of August, and my sister and I were intending to go, but while talking with the owner of sewitall, the organisers still hadnt confirmed the show, so 3 days before it was supposed to start, It was cancelled. Every year were been its been huge aswell, so apart from some huge admin problem I dont know much else about it, except that Stitches and Craft Show arent listing any of their other shows on their home website.

thats crazy, especially for all the people that intend to have displays at the show, imagine how much organisation goes into that. I was reading on the Sewital site that they are gearing up for a Melbourne show in about six days - they have some fantastic discounts on their fabric bundles - sooo wish I was going! Cant though, but thats ok, at least now I dont have to figure out a way to hand dye a cloth before I start on a fairy or mermaid from Mira. phew! lol

oh no, what happened? tell me all the gruesome details...what fabric paint did you use? how long did you soak it for? how hot was the water? did you add salt to fix the paint? were you aiming for a streaked, watery effect or a solid block of colour? any chance of a pic? (nosy much??? rofl)
Phoenix, I do silk painting so I know how hard it is to control how much colour is absorbed into fabric...it can even inspire one to tears at times!
I <3 the NC mermaids - they are so great. Im not quite sure where, but on some forum I spied a whole row of framed mermaids, all from NC and I was totally inspired to copy that idea, it was SOOOO good! lol.

Mum bought me an actual fabric dye, the ones in the little round container that you get from spothlight. and lets say, my light blue jeans didnt go well with dark blue dye...it wasnt bad for a first time dye! I dyed Adia, i prefer stitching on adia, Id like to try linen though, havent acutally tried it yet.
