I have always been confused by quarter stitches.  I mainly try to avoid them, but sometimes they are necessary.  When there are two colors occupying the same square with no backstitch going through it, which color is the quarter stitch and which color is the three quarter stitch? I hope I have explained it correctly.

I have always been confused by this as well. I have always done two 3/4 stitches. I don't know if there is a right or wrong way, but I prefer the way that looks rather than making a quarter and the other three quarter.

the background color is the quarter stitch, and the other is 3/4 stitch.

Oh, that makes a lot of sense! But what if neither of the colors are background? For instance, I have a WIP of one of Teressa wentzler designs and there is a very elaborate frame stitched around the entire piece in 2 different colors. Where the 2 colors meet there are often are fractional stitches...then what?
