I recently purchased a 12-inch square magnetic board and 4-heavy duty circular magnets to hold the pattern area I am working on. To follow my stitches I use magnetic stripes and a highlighter. The circular magnets double as a needle minder.

You can use needle minders to hold your pattern on your project (if on a frame) or even just on some stiff card.  I have one of the old magnetic boards, and strip magnets.  They were great.  You can buy magnetic strips on a roll (3m) on amazon.

I would use a magnetic planner with needle minders or some cardboard with heavy duty paper clips.

I use spring clips and fasten the pattern directly to my work a lot of the time so that it is always right in from of me.  But with the ability to convert most patterns into a PDF i also use an ipad when I can supersize the design so I dont have to strain as much to see the pattern I am working on.
