[Skill Help] Using hoops over finished work

I have a question about how to use a hoop over parts of the design thats already been stitched. Ive seen a lot of photos of people doing this, but HOW do you manage not to squish the stitches? I tried it once before, and my poor design, it looked smooshed. :o To bad for me, Im working on a larger design now, but my largest hoop somehow didnt make the move across the ocean with me. I only have small and medium sized hoops. Any suggestions for what I might do to keep my stitches looking nice with a hoop on top of the
