Nice tutorial!!! Mary Corbet does one too which I first started with and have never looked back.
The knack is to keep the fabric and the floss as taut as possible while you are working the French knot and to come down through the fabric as close to to the starting point as possible but not exactly in the same hole.
I dont fear French knots anymore. Colonial knots are perhaps a little easier but I keep forgetting how the figure of eight goes!!
Colonial knots are probably easier than french knots and it is pretty hard to tell the difference , plenty of great tutorials on youtube and some on reddit too.
