I did edit the last post a few times, attempting to clarify the statements as best as I can, I just hope my explanation makes some sense?

Thanks for the explanation.  I can follow your instructions when reading, I hope that its that easy when I knit the jacket for real.  Will definitely need help with the chart, can't make head or tail of it, and would much prefer "at the beginning of round sl2 st on cable to back of work etc:D  I have emailed your explanation to work and will print it out so its right by my side when attempting the mock pattern.  Can I confuse things even more??  If I have to knit in the round can I use Magic Loop?

Magic loop would be an excellent technique to adopt when you only have a few stitches on your circular needle and you are unable to stretch them out on them.
Have you been able to write the pattern out in order to make sense of it? If you are more comfortable with written instructions (rather than graphs) it may be the best way to approach this project.

You can knit this flat and yes the mattress stitch would go underneath the dog's belly.
