Yes, you can use ribbon to interweave or flosses to gather up groups of linen threads.  There are lots of variations, and depending on the number of cut threads you can make lots of patterns.

I like to find cheap and cheerful things.  I've found even cinnamon sticks work well in the place of dowels for christmas hangings!!  Small branches and twigs also.
