Great tips but Ive always been too scared to wash my pieces.  I take great care to not get them dirty while stitching and have never really encountered any problems.

I always hand wash my projects when finished and I´ve never had problems with fading...
Useful information, and I should add to iron on the reverse side of the work.

Ive always washed my pieces. I use cold water and Dawn dish detergent, which works very well to lift any grease and dirt out without scrubbing. I let the piece soak for 24 to 48 hours in the soapy water. Then I rinse them and let them soak for 24 to 48 hours in clear water. I do change the water about every 12 hours. Ive never had a problem with the thread bleeding, but then Ive only used DMC thread.

Thank you for that. I am really scared to wash my cross stitch - some of the threads I used arent well known names - will this make a difference?

If your using DMC thread, then there is no problem washing your finished projects because DMC threads are really of quality and will not bleed during the process of washing,

I also hang my work after towel drying it for like 5 -10 mins then I iron the back side of it,
I noticed that the colors seemed to be more vibrant after that.
