I save mine on a flash drive aka thumb drive.

You need to buy a large one. I have a couple that is 256 GB and one that is 128 GB. The one that is 128 GB has over 10,000 patterns saved on it.  Post time 2017-6-1 10:13

There are some sites that will allow you to save your books, patterns, documents, anything you want on their servers for free, you just need to search for them.  Im not sure were allowed to discuss anything like that here and I certainly wouldnt mention other sites but theyre easy enough to find.  What I will say, dont trust your hard drive or your external drives, Ive lost a few.  I now back up with Carbonite.  Its not ideal but its better than losing all things Ive worked so hard to get :-).
